Top Gun: Maverick trailer, casting, release date and everything you need to know

Top Gun: From 2019 Maverick had already been delayed a year and now fans are expected to wait even longer.

Tom Cruise will hope that when the long-awaited sequel finally arrives later this year, some 34 years after the original Top Gun flew into cinemas, nobody has lost their need for energy. Maverick spent the past three decades as one of the top aviators in the Navy. Now he's set to pass on his wisdom to a new batch of Top Gun recruits for a specialized mission that no one has ever seen. When Top Gun: Maverick arrives in Christmas 2020 cinemas, it sounds like it's a recipe for success, but what can we expect from our return to Naval Fighter Arms School at Naval Air Station Miramar?

The sequel was initially scheduled for release on July 12, 2019 before being met with an entire year's delay. Things were looking up though it moved slightly forward to June 24 , 2020 in the US and July 17, 2020 in the UK after that date. The sequel was hit with yet another break, though, but luckily it's not a whole year. Instead, Top Gun: Maverick will arrive in the UK and US at the cinemas on 23 December 2020.

The first trailer was released July 18, 2019 at Comic-Con International. Maverick still definitely needs speed. Upon finally releasing the trailer, fans were able to find comparisons between it and the Star Wars trailer: Force Awakens, citing different shots that seemed almost identical to the trailer of Episode VII. The second trailer landed as an early festive treat for Top Gun fans on 16 December 2019.

It's been more than 30 years since the US Navy Fighter Arms School in Miramar faced off as the best of the best, vying for the title of 'Top Gun.' But rivals Maverick (Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer) will certainly see Top Gun 2 reunite. Director Joseph Kosinski remains tight-lipped on how their friendship has improved over the years that have gone by. At one point Kilmer seemed to suggest that the otherwise retired Gene Hackman would play a part in the sequel.

Anthony Edwards is not ruling out a Ghost Goose plot, but we do have Miles Teller appearing as Goose 's son Bradley Bradshaw, at least if we don't get this. Michael Ironside as Lieutenant Commander Rick "Jester" Heatherly is one person who won't be back from the original, with the actor putting it down to the fact that his relationship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer is apparently not the greatest. As for Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf, actor Tom Skerritt still has to confirm the return of the character in the sequel. Although the character doesn't appear in the video, some fans believe that Viper's could be the funeral scene depicted. Tell this isn't it! Glen Powell signed up for the movie in a mystery role called Hangman after being rumored for the role of Goose 's son.

Jennifer Connelly will also be the star of the sequel as the female lead of the film, playing a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base. Jon Hamm and Ed Harris will join her, the latter as a so far unnamed rear admiral and direct superior of Maverick.
