A big controversy has emerged with Mel Gibson's recent movie Force of Nature

Mel Gibson's new movie Force of Nature, even before it was released, created a major controversy.

The film takes place in Puerto Rico during a Category 5 hurricane with Gibson playing Ray, who refuses to leave his apartment building during the storm along with his daughter (Kate Bosworth). When disgraced cop Cardillo (Emile Hirsch) tries to get them to leave, a gang of robbers arrives to execute a heist, forcing Ray, his daughter and Cardillo to team up and fend them off.

Journalist Andrew J Padilla has highlighted the injustices of who gets tax breaks in the film industry in Puerto Rico, and what kind of films government funding promotes.

After the trailer was released on Monday (May 18), Force of Nature created an instant uproar as Puerto Ricans witnessing Hurricane Maria, as well as the hardships they have dealt with on the island, let their feelings be known.

Although Force of Nature is set during a hurricane in Puerto Rico, others have pointed out that this is not about Hurricane Maria and is fictional.

But when Force of Nature arrives on video, DVD, and Blu-ray on June 30 we'll just have to wait and see what the reaction is.
